Corfu, Greece – The North Corfu Municipality is spearheading a groundbreaking initiative to create a lasting digital legacy for rural communities across Europe through the GreenMove European Program. The project, which recently held its 4th Transnational Meeting in Fano, Italy, from November 19 to 22, has committed to extending its impact beyond the initial EU funding period, aiming to build a permanent digital sustainability toolbox.
GreenMove: From Project to Living Legacy
The GreenMove program has already achieved significant milestones, including organizing workshops on integrated and green mobility, collecting crucial data for rural areas, and developing the Interactive Guide to Sustainable Living (GISLG). However, the most pivotal outcome of the recent meeting was the unanimous commitment to establish the GreenMove Sustainability Toolbox – a practical, open-source platform designed to aggregate effective electronic tools, strategic models, and best practices from GreenMove and previous European projects.
This innovative toolbox will enable municipalities and communities across Europe to implement green mobility and energy transition solutions without the prohibitive costs of developing them from scratch. “The true success of a project is measured by its longevity,” emphasized Theofanis Skembris, Deputy Mayor for Civil Protection and Climate Crisis, representing the North Corfu Municipality. “The toolbox is our commitment that the knowledge gained from GreenMove will not be lost in a final report, but will continue to evolve, fueling the green transition in Europe’s rural areas.”
Building on a History of Transformation
Throughout the project’s duration, partner communities have already initiated transformative changes:
- North Corfu Municipality, Greece: GreenMove directly contributed to the creation of a new strategy for Small Port Management, laying the groundwork for sustainable coastal mobility.
- Podstrana, Croatia: A proposal was submitted to the European Commission to establish May 9th as “European Sustainable Mobility Day,” linking the green transition with European identity.
- Malta, Latvia, and other countries: Plans for green tourism, on-demand transport, and inclusive infrastructure are being implemented.
The new digital toolbox will systematize these results, offering tangible solutions that extend beyond theoretical approaches, providing practical guidance for real-world application.
European Cooperation in Action
The GreenMove consortium, funded by the CERV-2024 – Network of Towns program, has demonstrated that innovation flourishes through collaboration and solidarity. By choosing to extend the project’s lifespan, the partners ensure that GreenMove remains a guiding force, a point of reference, and an inspiration for a sustainable future for rural Europe.
