The Athens Science Festival is inviting the public to embark on an exciting journey through the stars this Christmas season with a special two-day event focused on Astronomy and Astrophysics. Part of ‘The Christmas Lab,’ this scientific celebration promises a blend of knowledge and inspiration for all ages, featuring talks, stargazing, and an award-winning documentary. The event will take place from December 18 to 21, 2025, at the Athens Conservatoire.
Exploring the Invisible Universe and Citizen Science
On Sunday, December 21, at 7:00 PM, Dr. Eleni Vardoulaki will deliver a talk titled ‘The Invisible Universe & Citizen Science.’ This presentation will delve into the origins of the Universe and contemporary observational methods. Dr. Vardoulaki will explain why diverse telescopes, both on Earth and in space, are essential for observing astronomical objects and phenomena that remain invisible to the naked eye, from radio waves to X-rays.
Attendees will gain insights into the ‘invisible’ Universe and discover how citizens can actively contribute to modern scientific research. The talk will highlight the dynamic role of Citizen Science in fostering new and significant discoveries, making complex scientific concepts accessible and engaging for everyone.
The Winter Solstice and its Christmas Connection
On Saturday, December 20, at 6:00 PM, Athanasios Evangelopoulos from the ‘Dioskouroi’ Astronomy Club of Sparta will present a talk on ‘The Winter Solstice and its Relationship with Christmas.’ This interactive lecture will explore the winter solstice as a pivotal point in Earth’s orbit around the Sun, a phenomenon recognized since ancient times and deeply intertwined with the traditions of many cultures, including the celebration of Christmas.
This engaging presentation promises to blend science with history and tradition, captivating both children and adults with its fascinating insights into celestial mechanics and cultural heritage.
Stargazing in the Athenian Christmas Sky
Following Mr. Evangelopoulos’s talk on Saturday, December 20, at 7:30 PM, the public will have the unique opportunity to observe the starry Athenian sky through telescopes. This stargazing session will be conducted in collaboration with the ‘Dioskouroi’ Astronomy Club of Sparta and the Astronomical & Astrophysical Society of Western Greece, providing a hands-on experience of astronomical observation.
Award-Winning Documentary Screening: SALLY
The program also includes a screening of the documentary ‘SALLY’ on Saturday, December 20, at 9:30 PM. Produced by National Geographic, this film (2025 production) has already garnered significant acclaim, winning the Prix UPSIDE at the Pariscience – Paris Science Festival and the Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film Prize at Sundance 2025.
The documentary chronicles the remarkable life of Sally Ride (1951-2012), the first American woman to journey into space in 1983 as part of the STS-7 mission aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger. After her space missions, Ride dedicated her life to promoting STEM education, particularly among girls and young people. ‘SALLY’ is described as a deeply inspiring documentary about space, science, and the power of human vision, offering a compelling narrative of a pioneering figure in space exploration.
