Athens, Attica, Greece – Greece’s winter destinations are witnessing an unprecedented surge in holiday bookings, with many regions reporting full occupancy for the festive season. This boom is largely attributed to the popularity of festive theme parks and the allure of mountain towns, drawing visitors from across Greece and abroad.
Trikala and Nearby Mountain Towns Fully Booked
The region of Trikala, along with its picturesque mountain towns such as Meteora, Pyli, Pertouli, Mouzaki, and Plastira, is experiencing a particularly strong holiday season. Weekends and long holiday weekends are already fully booked. According to Trikala Mayor Nikos Sakkas, speaking to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency, occupancy from December 21 to January 6 stands at a remarkable 100%.
The “Mill of the Elves” in Trikala has proven to be a major tourism magnet, significantly boosting the local economy and benefiting surrounding destinations. Its success highlights the impact of well-executed festive attractions on regional tourism.
Nationwide Occupancy Rates and Demand
Across mainland Greece, the Panhellenic Federation of Hoteliers estimates an impressive holiday occupancy rate of approximately 75%. Angelos Kallias, Secretary-General of the Federation, noted that despite slight price increases, demand for winter holidays remains robust.
Drama’s Dreamland and Other Key Destinations
In Drama, the recently revitalized Dreamland park continues to be a major draw, attracting visitors from both Greece and international markets. Long weekends at the park are already fully booked, indicating its strong appeal. Kallias emphasized that the presence of snow will be a crucial factor for mountain resorts, while urban centers like Thessaloniki and Ioannina are expected to maintain steady tourism levels even after January 2.
Pelion and Volos are reporting occupancy rates close to 75%, driven by a variety of festive events and attractive hotel packages. While some bookings experienced a temporary slowdown due to farmers’ protests, the overall trend remains positive, as stated by the Magnesia Hoteliers’ Association. Ioannina is seeing over 90% bookings, with very few rooms remaining available for late December.
Thrace is also experiencing a busy period, especially Alexandroupoli, where New Year’s bookings have exceeded 90%. A significant portion of these bookings comes from Turkish and Bulgarian visitors, underscoring the region’s international appeal. Local events, such as Soufli’s fairytale park, are anticipated to further enhance tourism in the area.
Peloponnese Mountain Villages See Record Demand
The Peloponnese region is witnessing record demand for its charming mountain villages, including Dimitsana, Vytina, Stemnitsa, and Lagkadia. Pre-bookings in these areas have reached an exceptional 90-100%, according to the Regional Deputy for Tourism. Urban destinations within the Peloponnese, such as Kalamata and Nafplio, are also reporting strong holiday interest, with occupancy rates of 72% and 73%, respectively.
A Thriving Winter Tourism Season
Overall, Greece’s winter destinations are clearly thriving this festive season. The combination of popular theme parks, picturesque snowy mountain resorts, and vibrant city events is collectively driving a nationwide tourism surge. This indicates a successful strategy in attracting both domestic and international visitors during the colder months, diversifying Greece’s tourism offerings beyond its traditional summer appeal.
