THESSALONIKI – U.S. Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle affirmed Greece’s central role in Donald Trump’s strategic vision for energy, artificial intelligence, and regional investment during a series of meetings in Thessaloniki. Speaking to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency, Guilfoyle underscored the profound importance President Trump places on Greece’s emergence as an energy hub in Southeastern Europe, directly linking this development to broader geopolitical stability.
Greece’s Strategic Energy Role and Transatlantic Cooperation
Ambassador Guilfoyle emphasized the adage, “Energy independence equals national security,” citing the ongoing Ukraine-Russia conflict as a stark reminder of the perils of energy dependence. She highlighted a growing American interest in Greece’s energy infrastructure, including the Vertical Corridor, key ports, and the strategic significance of Alexandroupoli with its FSRU facilities. To further cement this cooperation, Guilfoyle confirmed that Washington will host a new 3+1 meeting (Greece, Cyprus, Israel, USA) in early 2026, exclusively dedicated to energy collaboration.
The Ambassador also referenced her involvement in discussions between President Zelensky and Prime Minister Mitsotakis concerning the supply of U.S. LNG to Ukraine. This initiative aims to bolster Ukraine’s resilience through the winter months and strengthen its position in future peace negotiations.
Growing U.S. Investment and Northern Greece as an AI Hub
During her visit to Thessaloniki, Ambassador Guilfoyle engaged with prominent business leaders across the technology, pharmaceutical, and industrial sectors of Northern Greece. She reported a “strong appetite for investment” from American companies, noting that investors prioritize stability, predictability, and a clear policy roadmap. “Greece is at a moment of enormous opportunity,” she stated, pointing to the recent P-TEC summit in Athens where significant agreements were signed, reinforcing Greece’s role as a transatlantic energy gateway.
Guilfoyle further stressed Northern Greece’s ascent as an emerging technology and AI hub, referencing the recent U.S.-Greece declaration on enhancing cooperation in artificial intelligence and innovation. She articulated the strategic connection between energy and AI, asserting, “Whoever controls energy will control AI,” and posited that Greece possesses the potential to become a leading regional player in advanced technology development.
A Reliable Ally and Social Initiatives
Ambassador Guilfoyle characterized the U.S.-Greece partnership as “historically stable and reliable,” commending Greece as a dependable ally for the United States. She reaffirmed that strengthening this alliance is a core priority of her tenure.
Her visit also included meetings on social issues and religious freedom. She met with Metropolitan Philotheos of Thessaloniki, commending the Church’s initiatives against domestic violence. Drawing from her background as a prosecutor, Guilfoyle discussed programs designed to support women escaping abusive environments and facilitate their re-entry into the workforce. She also highlighted religious freedom as a central tenet of Trump’s platform and a key reason for her alignment with her mission in Greece.
Support for Holocaust Museum and Freedom Square Redevelopment
Ambassador Guilfoyle held discussions with leaders of the Jewish Community of Thessaloniki regarding the progress of the Holocaust Museum of Greece and the transformation of Freedom Square into a memorial park. She conveyed assurances that both projects are moving forward and pledged to assist in securing fundraising support if necessary.
“Thessaloniki Has Won a Special Place in My Heart”
Deeply impressed by Thessaloniki’s culture, history, and hospitality, the Ambassador expressed that the city exceeded her expectations and that she intends to return frequently. She described her mission in Greece as an “exciting new chapter,” attributing her success to her upbringing, faith, and the unwavering support of her son.
