ATHENS, December 4, 2025 – The 15th Athens Bar Show, a landmark event for the global bartending community, recently concluded, emphasizing the growing significance of Athens’ nightlife and bar scene in transforming the city into a premier city break destination. The event, titled “15 Years Athens Bar Show: Athens’ Bar Scene and its Contribution to the Lives of Residents and the Experience of Visitors,” brought together industry leaders, local government officials, and tourism experts to discuss the city’s burgeoning appeal.

Athens: A Year-Round City Break Destination

Speakers at the event unanimously agreed that Athens’ authentic hospitality, vibrant atmosphere, and diverse food, drink, and urban cultural experiences are now primary motivators for international visitors. This shift positions Athens as a competitive year-round destination, moving beyond its traditional summer-centric tourism model.

Key discussions underscored the importance of leveraging international accolades and the strong presence of Athenian bars in prestigious global rankings. Panos Deligiannis, Managing Partner & Founder of FnL Guide, highlighted the consistent and impressive representation of Athenian bars in the “50 Best” lists, attributing this success to the city’s creative dynamism and unique character. He emphasized the need for further integration of local identity and authentic storytelling to enhance Athens’ unique appeal.

Strategic Initiatives for Tourism Growth

Dimitris Fragkakis, President of New Metropolitan Attica, outlined the Attica Region’s strategic focus for 2026, which includes gastronomy, wine tourism, and the Attica Vineyard. He stressed the importance of collaborative efforts between the Region, the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO), and the Municipality of Athens to effectively promote Athens as a comprehensive and modern destination. Fragkakis noted that initiatives like the Athens Bar Show are vital in showcasing a dynamic market and fostering partnerships.

Ioannis Georgizas, CEO of Developmental Athens S.A., emphasized the Municipality of Athens’ commitment to expanding the city’s cultural map. He stated that cultural events are increasingly designed to actively engage residents, making culture accessible and open to all. Georgizas also highlighted the importance of promoting responsible alcohol consumption and safe driving, advocating for enhanced public transportation options to ensure a safe and high-quality experience for both residents and visitors.

Economic Impact and Future Prospects

The Athens Bar Show itself demonstrated a significant economic impact, generating an estimated 2 million euros in direct revenue for local bars and contributing approximately 10 million euros in added value to the city. The event attracted over 17,000 participants, 137 exhibitors, and 130 international speakers from 51 countries, offering 80 hours of seminars that blended advanced technology and Artificial Intelligence with the art of bartending.

The accompanying Athens Bar Week featured more than 130 events across 70 venues, with nearly 100 international guest shifts and takeovers from 20 different cities. Over 20,000 cocktails were served, and more than 20,000 bar visits were recorded, involving 3,000 international visitors and another 3,000 from other parts of Greece. This surge in activity underscores the event’s role in bolstering the local bar scene and showcasing Greek hospitality.

GNTO’s Vision: Athens as an Experiential Destination

Eleni Mitraki, Head of the GNTO’s Tourist Promotion Department, reiterated the strategic promotion of Athens as a vibrant and multifaceted city break destination. According to research, 50% of visitors choose Athens for its diverse experiences, with approximately 10% specifically drawn by its entertainment offerings. Mitraki emphasized that a significant portion of international travel budgets is now allocated to gastronomy and unique experiences, presenting a substantial opportunity for Athens. “We have the chance to highlight new proposals that support year-round tourism and strengthen Athens’ image as a modern, lively European city,” she stated, referencing initiatives like promoting award-winning restaurants and bars and collaborating with international guides.

Babis Kaidalidis, General Manager of Bar Academy Greece, praised the high standards of Greek bars in terms of expertise and creativity, evidenced by continuous international awards and city guide recognition. He highlighted inherent Greek hospitality and the favorable climate as key attractions for visitors worldwide. Kaidalidis stressed the need for close collaboration between institutions and the market to fully leverage this dynamic as a magnet for tourists in both Athens and the Attica Region. He also identified the international aperitivo trend as a significant opportunity, given Greece’s competitive advantage in culture and lifestyle.

The collective efforts of these stakeholders aim to further solidify Athens’ position on the global tourism map, ensuring sustainable growth and enriching the experiences of both residents and visitors.
