Corfu Taxis Strike for 48 Hours, Demanding Policy Changes

Corfu, December 3 – Taxi services across Corfu were halted for 48 hours on Tuesday and Wednesday, December 2 and 3, as drivers participated in a nationwide strike. The decision for the 48-hour action was made unanimously by the local administrative board and association in Corfu, reflecting broader discontent within the taxi sector across Greece.

Key Demands of Striking Taxi Drivers

The strike, which involved mobilizations across the country, stems from a series of long-standing grievances and demands from taxi operators. The primary issues raised by the drivers are multifaceted, touching upon environmental regulations, market competition, operational costs, and taxation.

Extension of Electromobility Obligation

One of the central demands is an extension of the electromobility obligation until 2035. Taxi drivers argue that the current timeline for transitioning to electric vehicles is unrealistic and places an undue financial burden on operators, many of whom are small business owners. They seek more time to adapt to the new environmental standards and secure the necessary investments for vehicle upgrades.

Addressing Unfair Competition from Multinational Applications

Another significant point of contention is the perceived unfair competition from multinational ride-hailing applications. Drivers claim that these platforms operate under different regulatory frameworks, creating an uneven playing field. They are calling for immediate measures to combat what they describe as ‘illicit competition’ and to ensure that all operators adhere to the same standards and regulations.

Combating Illegal Work in the Sector

The taxi sector is also demanding immediate action to crack down on illegal work, particularly from private hire vehicles (E.I.X.) that allegedly operate outside established regulations. This issue is seen as a direct threat to the livelihoods of licensed taxi drivers and the integrity of the profession.

Tariff Adjustments and Minimum Fares

Drivers are advocating for an increase in time-based charges and the minimum fare across the entire country. They argue that current tariffs do not adequately reflect the rising operational costs, including fuel, maintenance, and insurance. A readjustment of the tariff structure is deemed essential for the economic viability of taxi services.

Re-negotiation for Access to Special Lanes

The re-negotiation of access for laden taxis to special lanes is another key demand. Drivers believe that restricted access to these lanes hinders their efficiency and ability to provide timely services, especially in congested urban areas. They seek a more equitable policy that would allow them to utilize these lanes when carrying passengers.

Implementation of Pending Legislative Issues

The taxi associations are also pushing for the implementation of all pending issues from the fundraising bill. This refers to a series of legislative measures that have been proposed but not yet fully enacted, which are crucial for the sector’s long-term stability and development.

Fair Tax Treatment

Fair tax treatment is a recurrent demand from taxi drivers. They are calling for a review of current tax policies, arguing that the existing framework places a disproportionate burden on their profession. They seek a more equitable taxation system that considers the unique challenges and operational realities of taxi businesses.

A meeting with the Ministry is anticipated, where the Presidium, along with the heads of the factions, will participate to discuss these pressing issues. The outcome of these discussions will be crucial in determining the future course of action for the taxi sector.

The strike has undoubtedly impacted daily life in Corfu, affecting residents and tourists alike who rely on taxi services for transportation. The extent of the disruption underscores the critical role that taxis play in the local transport infrastructure.
