LARISA, Greece – Farmers across Greece have escalated their protests, implementing widespread blockades on national highways and border crossings to demand overdue payments and improved conditions. The demonstrations, which began on Monday, December 1, 2025, have seen significant participation, with hundreds of tractors and farm vehicles disrupting traffic flow.

Malgara Tolls: A Growing Blockade Towards Athens

In the Delta municipality, farmers continued their blockade of the national road towards Athens at the Malgara tolls on Tuesday, December 2. The road has been closed since Monday noon, and protestors remain resolute in their demands. Members of the protest coordination committee informed the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA-MPA) that the blockade, which was unexpectedly initiated on Monday morning, is steadily gaining momentum. More farmers from surrounding areas are continuously arriving at the scene to reinforce the mobilization. Organizers have not ruled out the possibility of extending the blockade to include the road in the direction of Thessaloniki within the next few hours, further impacting national transportation routes.

Evzoni Border Crossing: International Traffic Halted

Simultaneously, farmers from the municipality of Paionia and the broader region once again blocked the Evzoni border crossing on Tuesday at noon. This strategic location, connecting Greece with North Macedonia, was affected in both the lanes entering Greece and those exiting towards its northern neighbor. On Monday evening, at 18:00, farmers initially restricted entry to Greece for trucks only. This partial blockade was later escalated to a complete halt of traffic, which was eventually lifted at midnight. However, the renewed blockade on Tuesday signifies a hardened stance from the protestors. More than 150 tractors and farm vehicles have converged at the Evzoni site, indicating a strong and growing presence of the agricultural community.

Demands and Impact of the Protests

The farmers’ primary grievances revolve around overdue payments and what they describe as inadequate support for the agricultural sector. These protests are a culmination of long-standing frustrations over financial instability and government policies affecting their livelihoods. The blockades have caused considerable disruption for commuters, commercial transport, and international travel, highlighting the critical role of the agricultural sector in the national economy and infrastructure.

Local authorities and government officials have been monitoring the situation closely, with discussions expected to address the farmers’ demands. However, as of Tuesday afternoon, no immediate resolution appears to be in sight, and the farmers have vowed to continue their actions until their concerns are adequately addressed.

The extensive nature of these protests, involving key transportation arteries and border points, underscores the widespread discontent among Greek farmers. The ongoing demonstrations serve as a powerful reminder of the challenges faced by the agricultural community and their determination to secure fair treatment and sustainable livelihoods.

Further updates on the situation are anticipated as negotiations progress and the farmers’ coordination committees continue to strategize their next steps.
