Corfu, December 1 – The Parents’ Association of the 14th Primary and Experimental Kindergarten in Corfu has voiced its deep concern and strong protest regarding the decision to reopen the school this Monday. This decision comes despite the fact that no disinfection has been carried out in areas affected by stagnant water, sewage, and residues that remained in the yard after recent floods.
Unsafe Schoolyard and Health Concerns
According to the association, the school’s outdoor area remains unsafe, prohibiting students from using the yard. This means children will be confined indoors throughout school hours. The parents argue that operating a school with an unsuitable outdoor area, without prior disinfection, and without addressing the hygiene issues caused by prolonged exposure to contaminated water, fails to ensure the minimum health and safety conditions for students and staff.
“As a Parents’ Association, we consider it unacceptable for families to be asked to send their children to an environment that continues to pose public health risks,” stated a representative of the association. “The decision to operate the school without completing the necessary interventions creates legitimate concerns and puts parents in an extremely difficult position.”
Parents’ Demands for Immediate Action
The Parents’ Association has put forward the following demands:
- Immediate disinfection of all areas where stagnant water or sewage was present.
- Restoration of the sewage system and a detailed on-site inspection by the competent authorities.
- A re-evaluation of the school’s suitability for reopening before students return.
- Official information provided to parents regarding the measures taken and the actual level of safety in the school premises.
The association emphasized its commitment to closely monitoring the situation and advocating for what it considers fundamental: a safe, clean, and hygienic school environment for all children.
Background of the Flooding Incident
The recent floods in Corfu left significant damage, particularly in low-lying areas. The 14th Primary and Experimental Kindergarten was among the affected institutions, with its premises exposed to contaminated water and sewage. Despite the visible impact, authorities decided to proceed with the school’s reopening, leading to the current protest by concerned parents.
Impact on Students and Daily Operations
The inability to use the schoolyard not only poses a health risk but also affects the students’ daily routine and overall well-being. Confinement indoors for extended periods can impact children’s physical activity and social development. The parents highlight that a healthy learning environment includes safe outdoor spaces for play and recreation.
Local authorities have yet to issue an official response to the parents’ demands. The situation continues to evolve as parents await concrete actions to ensure the safety and health of their children before they return to the classrooms.
The Parents’ Association has indicated that it will consider further actions if their demands are not met promptly, underscoring their determination to protect the health of the students.
