Corfu, Greece – A specialized team from the Hellenic Survey of Geology and Mineral Exploration (HSGME) commenced on-site geological surveys in the Municipality of North Corfu on Saturday, November 29, 2025. This action was initiated following a request from the Municipality and its declaration of a state of civil protection emergency, prompted by extensive damage caused by severe storms in November 2025.
Emergency Meeting Held at Municipal Hall
Prior to the commencement of the field inspections, a working meeting was held under the chairmanship of the Mayor of North Corfu, George Maherimaris. Attendees included Deputy Mayors Chariton Koutsouris and Spyridoula Kokkali, the delegated Councillor for Daily Life, George Mpantounos, the President of the Karousades Community, Matina Nikaki, as well as officials from Civil Protection, Operational Works, and engineers from the Municipal Technical Services.
During the meeting, discussions focused on the widespread landslides affecting numerous communities within the Municipal Units of Esperion and Agios Georgios. Immediate priorities were established, encompassing both the safety of residents and the gradual restoration of critical infrastructure.
Extensive Inspections Reveal Hazardous Conditions in Karousades, Peroulades, Velonades
The HSGME team, accompanied by engineers from the technical services, Civil Protection officials, and the Municipal Operational Works, began their assessments in Karousades, identified as the epicenter of the landslides. The inspections revealed:
- Extensive soil displacements and slides.
- Destabilized slopes.
- Subsidence and collapses of road surfaces.
- Buildings deemed ‘red-level’ dangerous.
- Significant damage within the village due to the strong force of rainwater runoff.
Subsequent inspections were conducted in Peroulades and Velonades. The HSGME team is expected to cover the entire Municipality by Wednesday, December 3, 2025, including areas within the Municipal Unit of Esperion and the Municipal Unit of Agios Georgios, where major landslides have occurred. These areas include, but are not limited to, Avliotes, Sidari, Armenades, and Kavvadades.
Millions in Damages – Water Supply Alone Exceeds €1 Million
Initial estimates from the Municipal services indicate that the damage is immense and multi-layered, with a direct impact on the daily functioning of settlements and the safety of residents. Specifically:
- Damage to the water supply network alone exceeds one million euros.
- Many settlements have sustained severe damage to roads, retaining walls, infrastructure, and utility networks.
- Restoration efforts are projected to require specialized interventions and substantial funding.
Urgent Demand for State Funding – The Municipality’s Message
The Municipality of North Corfu emphasized that the current situation surpasses the capabilities of local government, necessitating immediate, substantial, and targeted state support for both immediate safety needs and permanent restoration efforts.
Mayor George Maherimaris stated: “The extent of the damage is unprecedented. The Municipality of North Corfu urgently requires funding to heal wounds that threaten lives, properties, and critical infrastructure. Local government is fighting on the front lines, but it cannot bear the burden of such widespread destruction alone.”
The Municipality affirmed its commitment to responsibly inform citizens and to institutionally, factually, and decisively pursue all necessary resources for the full restoration of the affected areas.
