Corfu, Greece – The Corfu Builders’ Union has announced its decision to participate in the nationwide construction strike scheduled for December 10th. This action follows a call from the Panhellenic Federation of Construction Workers and aims to address critical demands within the sector.

General Assembly to Organize Strike

In preparation for the strike, the Union is calling on all members and construction workers to attend a General Assembly on Thursday, December 4th, at 6 PM. The meeting will take place at the Labor Center in Corfu. During the assembly, the historical documentary “Heroic Builders, Colleagues” will be screened to highlight the struggles and achievements of the construction industry workers.

Why a Nationwide Strike?

According to the Union, this strike represents a pivotal moment in advocating for crucial demands of the construction sector and is expected to contribute to the broader struggle of the working class. The Union emphasizes that this action is a practical demonstration of their belief in the power of organized struggle.

“This is the only path that brings results and new achievements, contributing to the understanding, by more and more people, that the most decisive factor that can create new hopeful data and turn things around, is the strengthening of our struggles, our demands and the line of struggle centered on our needs and interests,” stated the Union in an official announcement.

The specific demands of the strike have not been fully detailed in the initial announcement but are understood to revolve around improving working conditions, wages, and overall rights for construction workers across Greece.

Impact on Corfu’s Construction Sector

The participation of Corfu’s builders in this nationwide strike is expected to temporarily halt construction activities on the island. The duration and full impact of the strike will depend on the outcome of negotiations and the response from employers and the government.

The Union urges all construction workers to participate massively in the upcoming General Assembly to ensure effective organization and a strong, unified voice during the strike. The meeting on December 4th will be crucial for finalizing strategies and informing members about the next steps.

This strike is part of a larger movement by various labor unions in Greece, advocating for better conditions and fair treatment for workers amidst economic challenges. The construction sector, a significant part of the Greek economy, has been particularly affected by recent economic shifts, making these demands all the more pressing for the workers.

The Corfu Builders’ Union continues to emphasize the importance of collective action and solidarity among workers to achieve their goals and secure a more equitable future for those in the construction industry.
