Athens, Greece – A recent study conducted by Good To Go Insurance in 2024 has positioned Athens as the 6th most accessible city in Europe for travelers with disabilities. This recognition highlights the city’s growing efforts to accommodate individuals with mobility challenges or medical conditions, making international travel more inclusive.
The Growing Need for Accessible Travel Destinations
As the global population ages and awareness of diverse travel needs increases, the demand for accessible destinations has surged. Travelers with disabilities or specific medical requirements actively seek locations that cater to their needs, ensuring a comfortable and safe travel experience. The study by Good To Go Insurance focused on identifying European cities that excel in providing such accessibility, offering a valuable resource for this demographic.
Methodology of the Study
To determine the most accessible cities, Good To Go Insurance first compiled a preliminary list of the top 20 European cities based on their annual visitor numbers. Subsequently, each destination was evaluated across several key metrics: public transportation, healthcare facilities, and the availability of accessible attractions and restaurants. This comprehensive approach allowed for a nuanced understanding of each city’s accessibility infrastructure.
Athens’ Strong Performance in Accessibility
Athens achieved a commendable score of 64 out of 100 in the study, securing its 6th place ranking. A significant factor contributing to this high score is the city’s impressive number of accessible tourist attractions, totaling 490. Furthermore, Athens boasts 541 accessible restaurants, ensuring that visitors with disabilities can easily enjoy the local culinary scene. This robust infrastructure underscores Athens’ commitment to fostering an inclusive tourism environment.
Top Accessible Cities in Europe
The study revealed a diverse list of European cities leading the way in accessibility. Paris, known as the ‘City of Light,’ topped the list with an overall score of 80/100, excelling in almost all key metrics except public transportation options. Lisbon, surprisingly, secured the 2nd position with a score of 70/100. Despite its hilly terrain and cobblestone streets, the Portuguese capital scored highly for its transportation options, accessible cultural attractions, and healthcare facilities. Three Italian cities also made it into the top five: Florence, Milan, and Venice, each offering unique accessibility strengths.
- Paris, France (80/100)
- Lisbon, Portugal (70/100)
- Milan, Italy
- Florence, Italy
- Venice, Italy
- Athens, Greece (64/100)
- Amsterdam, Netherlands
- Barcelona, Spain
- Prague, Czech Republic
- Munich, Germany
Challenges and Areas for Improvement
While many cities demonstrated strong accessibility, the study also identified destinations with lower scores. Dublin, for instance, scored poorly (38/100) in public transport and hospital availability. Madrid (31/100), Warsaw (26/100), and Stockholm (25/100) also fell short of expectations for easy-access holidays. Istanbul ranked at the very bottom of the list with the lowest score of 22/100, despite its strong public transport coverage.
Grant Winter of Good To Go Insurance commented on the findings, stating, “Travel is becoming increasingly accessible year by year. Many world-class destinations now offer excellent infrastructure for seniors or people with disabilities. From accessible city centers to well-equipped hospitals, it’s easier than ever to enjoy a cultural break without sacrificing comfort or safety.”
Looking Ahead: Towards More Inclusive Travel
The findings of this study serve as a valuable benchmark for cities striving to enhance their accessibility. Athens’ inclusion in the top 10 signifies its progress and potential to become an even more welcoming destination for all travelers. Continuous improvements in infrastructure, public services, and awareness will further contribute to making travel a truly universal experience across Europe.
