Athens Considers Morning Truck Ban on Kifissos to Alleviate Traffic Congestion

Athens, December 1 – Greek authorities are exploring a pilot restriction on heavy vehicles on Kifissos Avenue between 7:00 and 10:00 AM, aiming to alleviate severe morning traffic congestion. This proposal, currently under discussion by the Ministry of Transport, seeks to improve the daily commute for thousands of drivers in the bustling Greek capital.

Pilot Truck Ban to Address Kifissos Congestion

The initiative focuses on Kifissos Avenue, one of Athens’ busiest thoroughfares, where morning traffic often leads to significant delays. Deputy Minister of Transport Konstantinos Kyranakis highlighted the current situation, describing the morning commute from Piraeus to Faliro as a daily “ordeal” that can extend to two hours due to extensive queues.

The proposed pilot program would specifically target heavy trucks, prohibiting their movement on Kifissos during the peak morning hours of 7:00 AM to 10:00 AM. The Ministry of Transport is actively monitoring traffic patterns using drones to gather comprehensive data on vehicle numbers and road occupancy. The results of these surveys are anticipated soon and are expected to provide crucial insights into the potential effectiveness of such a ban.

Advantages and Disadvantages of the Proposed Ban

Kyranakis outlined both the potential benefits and drawbacks of the planned restriction. The primary advantage identified is a reduction in the number of vehicles on Kifissos and the Attiki Odos highway during the most congested hours. This could lead to smoother traffic flow and decreased travel times for commuters.

However, the deputy minister also acknowledged significant challenges. Experts warn that while the ban might clear Kifissos during the restricted period, it could merely shift bottlenecks to the hours immediately preceding and following the ban. Traffic could become heavily congested before 7:00 AM and after 10:00 AM as trucks adjust their routes and schedules. This raises concerns that the measure might redistribute congestion rather than eliminate it entirely.

Kyranakis noted that current regulations permit supply deliveries in Athens from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM, suggesting that early morning adjustments for businesses might be feasible. Nevertheless, managing a potential surge of heavy vehicles immediately after 10:00 AM remains a key concern for transport officials.

Public Impact and Business Considerations

While expressing support for testing the measure, Kyranakis emphasized the importance of transparency regarding its potential consequences. He acknowledged that the ban could incur additional costs for businesses reliant on early-morning deliveries, particularly those requiring staff to work outside conventional hours. These increased operational costs might, in turn, be passed on to consumers, affecting prices of goods and services.

“It’s a solution we need to test, but we must be honest with the public about the consequences,” Kyranakis stated, underscoring the need for public awareness and understanding as the pilot program is considered.

The decision to implement such a ban reflects a broader effort by Athens authorities to address chronic urban traffic issues. The insights gathered from the drone surveillance and the pilot program itself will be critical in determining the long-term viability and broader application of similar traffic management strategies in the future.

Further announcements regarding the implementation timeline and specific details of the pilot program are expected once the Ministry of Transport concludes its data analysis and internal discussions.
