Corfu, November 28 – The Popular Rally of the Ionian Islands (Laiki Syspeirosi) has strongly criticized the Regional Authority for its perceived inaction following the devastating floods that struck Corfu earlier this November. In a statement released today, the political group expressed outrage that crucial discussions regarding flood relief and prevention were not prioritized in the upcoming Regional Council meeting.
Regional Council Meeting Agenda Sparks Controversy
The Regional Council of the Ionian Islands is scheduled to convene on November 29, 2025. However, the Popular Rally highlighted that on Thursday, November 27, the Regional Authority introduced two new items to the agenda, outside of the regular proceedings (Extraordinary Agenda Items – EHD), neither of which addressed the pressing issue of the recent floods.
The controversial agenda items include:
- “Granting the Aegis of the Ionian Islands Region for the exhibition ‘OTA EXPO 2026’.”
- “Approval of co-organizing a cultural event of the Ionian Islands Region for the year 2026 and granting authorization.”
The Popular Rally described this move as “extremely provocative,” especially given that “all of Corfu is drowning” in the aftermath of the floods. They had considered it self-evident that the Regional Authority would introduce the recent floods, measures to support victims, actions for infrastructure restoration, and anti-flood protection works as an extraordinary agenda item.
Popular Rally Demands Action on Flood Protection
Given the Regional Authority’s apparent lack of priority for this critical issue, the Popular Rally has formally requested that the following topic be added as an Extraordinary Agenda Item for the upcoming session on November 29, 2025:
“Anti-flood planning in Corfu. Support measures for victims, restoration of damages, anti-flood protection and prevention works in Corfu after the recent floods of November.”
This demand underscores the urgency felt by the Popular Rally regarding the need for immediate and comprehensive action to address the consequences of the recent natural disaster and to implement long-term solutions for flood prevention.
Background to the Floods
The statement refers to recent floods that occurred in November, causing significant damage across Corfu. While specific details of the extent of the damage are not provided in this release, the Popular Rally’s strong reaction suggests a widespread impact on infrastructure and residents. The emphasis on both immediate support for victims and long-term preventative measures highlights the severity of the situation and the perceived inadequacy of the current response.
The call for “anti-flood planning” indicates a belief that the current infrastructure and preventative measures are insufficient to cope with such events, a common concern in regions prone to heavy rainfall and changing weather patterns. The political group’s intervention aims to ensure that the Regional Council addresses these critical issues with the seriousness and urgency they demand.
The Popular Rally’s statement serves as a public challenge to the Regional Authority, urging them to shift their focus from cultural events and exhibitions to the immediate needs of the community affected by the floods. The outcome of the Regional Council meeting on November 29 will be closely watched by residents and local political groups.
