Corfu, Greece – November 27, 2025 – Storm Adel has unleashed its full force across Corfu, Epirus, and the municipality of Andritsaina-Krestena, transforming roads into raging rivers and torrents. Homes have been inundated, and drivers found themselves trapped by the fierce waters, prompting numerous calls to the Fire Department.
Emergency Services Mobilized in Corfu and Epirus
In the village of Potamos, Corfu, members of the EMAK (Special Disaster Unit) resorted to using boats to rescue residents from their flooded homes as the local river overflowed its banks. Debris such as reeds, wood, and garbage choked the two arches of the village bridge, exacerbating the flooding.
A section of plexiglass detached from the roof of a swimming pool in Corfu during a competition, with spectators, including many children, present. The facility was immediately evacuated to allow the Fire Department to safely remove the debris.
Air travel was also affected, with a flight from Athens to Corfu unable to land at “Ioannis Kapodistrias” Airport due to hazardous weather conditions, forcing its return to Athens. Civil Protection authorities issued an urgent message via 112 to residents of Corfu, urging them to limit unnecessary travel.
Tzoumerka and Arta Face Renewed Threats
The villages in Tzoumerka are grappling with a new wave of adverse weather, still reeling from severe storms in previous days. In Pramanta, a fierce storm and hailstorm struck the already damaged area, putting homes at risk of collapse.
A state of alert has been declared in northern Tzoumerka, where continuous heavy rainfall has saturated the ground, posing a significant flood risk even with moderate precipitation. Municipal crews are working to clear passages for water, removing accumulated debris.
In Melissourgoi, Arta, torrential rains caused mountain slopes to collapse, sweeping away sheepfolds. Landslides blocked roads, leaving residents trapped in their homes for hours without electricity. In Paramythia, Thesprotia, vast agricultural areas have been submerged, resembling lakes.
Another 112 message was sent to residents of Aetolia-Acarnania shortly after 9:00 PM, warning them of intense rainfall and landslides.
Meganisi and Andritsaina-Krestena Suffer Significant Damage
On Meganisi, two homes were flooded due to heavy rainfall. A municipal team, led by Mayor Gerasimos Katopodis and aided by Deputy Mayors Takis Katopodis and Kostas Kavvadas, is actively pumping water from residential yards using Civil Protection vehicles. Roads on the island have turned into rivers, and residents are assisting in the municipal efforts. As dusk complicates operations, authorities advise citizens to avoid non-essential travel.
The municipality of Andritsaina-Krestena has once again been severely impacted by the recent torrential rains, which have caused extensive damage to roads and other infrastructure. The agricultural road network has also suffered significant damage, rendering many areas impassable during a critical olive harvesting period.
The Municipal Technical Service has submitted a study to the Ministry of Interior for funding approval, while municipal machinery is already undertaking restoration work. Crews, under the directive of Mayor Sakis Balioukos, are working to address the immediate problems. The Region of Western Greece is expected to provide assistance for damages concerning infrastructure under its jurisdiction.
The ongoing severe weather underscores the vulnerability of these regions to extreme meteorological phenomena, prompting a concerted effort from local and regional authorities to mitigate the impact and support affected communities.
