NEW YORK, November 27, 2025 – The ‘Spiros Samaras’ Philharmonic Society of Korakiana, Corfu, is set to participate in the 2026 Greek Independence Parade in New York City. This significant announcement was made by Elias Katsos, President of the 2026 Parade, following a meeting with journalist Dionysis Mamalos of CORFUTVNEWS and Th. Doukakis, President of the Pan-Corfiot Association of America.
Corfu Philharmonic’s Participation Confirmed
Mr. Katsos officially confirmed the news, stating, “It was a great pleasure to meet at AVRA Madison with Dionysis Mamalos, the well-known Greek journalist, and Theodoros Doukakis, President of the Pan-Corfiot Association of America. We had a wonderful discussion, including updates on the 2026 Greek Independence Day Parade in New York.”
The exciting news announced was that the ‘Spiros Samaras’ Philharmonic Orchestra of Korakiana, Corfu, will come next year in full force to participate in the parade. Their presence is particularly significant, as the 2026 parade will also honor the 250th anniversary of the birth of Ioannis Kapodistrias in 1776 in Corfu, one of the great Fathers of the Greek Nation.
About the ‘Spiros Samaras’ Philharmonic Society of Korakiana
Established on September 3, 1958, and legally constituted on October 18 of the same year, the Korakiana Philharmonic is one of Corfu’s most important cultural institutions. Dedicated to sacred and vocal music, theater, dance, and visual arts, its mission is to preserve and promote Corfiot culture locally and internationally.
The Philharmonic is housed in two privately owned buildings in Ano Korakiana: one building hosts the band and its music schools, and another is used for additional departments and events.
Educational Programs and Impact
Since its founding, the Philharmonic has operated various educational programs, all free of charge, including:
- School of Theoretical Studies
- School of Melodic Solfege
- School of Advanced Theoretical & Music History
- School of Woodwind Instruments
- School of Brass Instruments
- School of Percussion Instruments
Currently, 56 students are enrolled under 7 teachers, including the school director and assistant conductor. The Schools not only support the Philharmonic itself but also provide musicians to military bands, symphony orchestras, and musical ensembles throughout Corfu and beyond. Many graduates continue to the State Orchestra of Athens, the National Opera, or become music educators.
The main Philharmonic ensemble consists of approximately 100 musicians, with an additional choir, ecclesiastical choir, and dance sections.
Mr. Katsos concluded, “A wonderful meal, great company, and truly exciting news for the 2026 parade.”
