Athens Transport Worker Crushed by 300kg Train Parts, Sparking Safety Outcry
Piraeus, Greece – A tragic workplace accident has cast a dark shadow over Athens’ public transport system, as a 50-year-old senior technician for STASY, the company managing the city’s metro, tram, and suburban railway, was fatally crushed by heavy train parts. The incident, which occurred yesterday evening at a repair pit in Piraeus, has ignited protests and brought critical questions about workplace safety standards to the forefront.
The victim, whose name has not been released, was reportedly working in a repair pit when he was struck by train components, specifically “choppers,” weighing over 300 kilograms. Despite being rushed to Tzaneio Hospital, he succumbed to his severe injuries. Emergency services, including firefighters, police, and paramedics, were captured by Orange Press Agency footage during a tense rescue operation.
A ‘Pit of Death’ – Warnings Unheeded?
Dimitris Gourtis, a member of STASY’s Health and Safety Committee, did not mince words in his condemnation of the conditions that led to the technician’s death. “The area was never intended for storage of these heavy components; it was a repair pit, and it tragically became a pit of death for our colleague,” Gourtis stated, highlighting a severe misallocation of space and disregard for safety protocols.
Gourtis further alleged that STASY’s administration had repeatedly ignored warnings about safety risks. “We have sent hundreds of pages of reports highlighting safety risks, yet no action was taken. Those who speak out are often disciplined,” he claimed, painting a grim picture of a culture where safety concerns are allegedly met with intimidation rather than remedial action.
STASY’s Response and Mounting Anger
STASY, the operator of Athens’ fixed-track transport, issued a statement expressing sorrow: “The management and employees of STASY express our deep grief for the loss of a colleague who dedicated many years of service to the family of Fixed Track Transport. The fatal injury occurred during technical work at our Piraeus facility. Our sincere condolences go to his family. Authorities are conducting a full investigation in cooperation with STASY.”
However, this official condolences has done little to quell the rising anger among workers and citizens. Protests have erupted outside the Piraeus ISAP station, with union members and concerned citizens demanding a thorough investigation and immediate, concrete measures to safeguard workers. This latest tragedy marks the second fatal accident among STASY employees this year, intensifying the public debate on occupational health and safety standards across Greece.
Call for Urgent Reforms
As authorities continue to investigate the precise circumstances surrounding the accident, unions are vociferously calling for urgent reforms to prevent similar tragedies in the future. The incident underscores a critical need for transparent accountability, stricter enforcement of safety regulations, and a genuine commitment from management to prioritize worker well-being over operational expediency.
The question remains: how many more lives must be lost before substantive changes are implemented to ensure that no workplace becomes a “pit of death”? The tragic death of a dedicated technician serves as a stark reminder of the human cost of neglected safety protocols and the urgent necessity for systemic change within Greece’s public transport sector.
