Corfu, November 26 – The Cabinet has approved the immediate filling of eight (8) out of sixteen (16) positions for the re-establishment of the Municipal Police within the new Internal Service Organization, which was approved a year ago. This decision, made during its meeting on October 27, 2025, marks a significant step towards enhancing public order and quality of life in Corfu.
Reinstatement to Address Critical Gaps
The first eight Municipal Police officers will be recruited through the Supreme Council for Civil Personnel Selection (ASEP) and will subsequently undergo intensive training by the Hellenic Police. This initiative aims to address critical gaps that have affected the smooth operation of the Municipality, thereby improving the quality of life for both residents and visitors. The re-establishment of the Municipal Police is particularly crucial during the tourist season, as it will contribute to the enforcement of regulations concerning intense professional activities.
Key Responsibilities of the Municipal Police
The Municipal Police will be responsible for a range of duties, including:
- Parking controls
- Regulation of public space usage
- Cleanliness issues
- Illegal signs and advertisements
- Imposition of fines where applicable
These responsibilities are designed to ensure adherence to local ordinances and maintain a high standard of living and safety within the community.
Additional Permanent Positions Approved
In addition to the Municipal Police positions, the Cabinet’s decision also approved the filling of several other permanent positions to strengthen the Municipality’s administrative and technical capabilities:
- One (1) position for a Financial Executive (PE)
- One (1) position for a Mechanical Engineer (PE)
- One (1) position for a Civil Engineer (PE)
- One (1) position for an IT Specialist (PE)
- One (1) position for a Veterinarian
These appointments reflect a broader effort to bolster the Municipality’s operational efficiency across various departments.
Impact on Corfu’s Community
The re-establishment of the Municipal Police is expected to have a tangible positive impact on Corfu. By enforcing regulations and maintaining public order, the new force will help to alleviate issues such as illegal parking, misuse of public spaces, and unauthorized commercial activities. This will, in turn, contribute to a more organized and pleasant environment for both permanent residents and the large number of tourists who visit the island annually.
The training provided by the Hellenic Police will ensure that the new officers are well-equipped to handle their duties effectively and professionally. Their presence is anticipated to enhance the overall sense of security and compliance with local laws, fostering a more harmonious urban landscape.
Future Outlook
While only eight positions have been approved initially, the long-term plan includes filling all sixteen foreseen positions, indicating a sustained commitment to strengthening local law enforcement and administrative functions. The Municipality of Corfu is poised to benefit significantly from these new recruitments, leading to improved public services and a better-regulated urban environment.
