Athens, 26 November – The Municipality of Athens has been awarded two prestigious accolades at the 6th Panhellenic Conference on Digitization of Cultural Heritage – EuroMed 2025. The distinctions were granted for the ‘Memory Trail 1940-1944’ project at the 3rd Athens Cemetery and for an extensive study on the city’s museums, underscoring the city’s dedication to preserving and promoting its rich cultural heritage.

‘Memory Trail 1940-1944’ Recognized as Best Practice

The ‘Memory Trail 1940-1944’, a collaborative effort between the Development Company of the Municipality of Athens and the Cultural Heritage Department of the Urban Planning Directorate, received the Best Practice Award in the Local Government Bodies category. The project, titled ‘Those Who Missed It. A Journey of Remembrance 1940-1944 at the 3rd Cemetery of Athens’, was presented by Zetta Antonopoulou, Head of the Department of Cultural Heritage of the Municipality of Athens, and Eliza Neophytou, architect-pedagogue specializing in Museology.

This initiative leverages modern tools for documentation, digitization, and public history to honor the victims of the Occupation, re-establishing the 3rd Cemetery as a vital site for memory and historical education. The presentation took place during the EuroMed 2025 conference, held from November 19 to 22 at the ‘House of Cyprus’ (Embassy of the Republic of Cyprus) in Athens.

Award for Scientific Work on Athens’ Museums

In addition to the team award, Ms. Neophytou was individually recognized with an award for best scientific work. This distinction was for her comprehensive Study on Museums within the Municipality of Athens, a project initiated by Development Athens to map the city’s diverse museum landscape. The study aims to identify needs, educational tools, and accessibility levels of museums, proposing modern strategies to enhance their public outreach and educational functions.

Mayoral and CEO Statements on the Awards

Haris Doukas, the Mayor of Athens, commented on the significance of these awards: “These two distinctions confirm the deep commitment of our city to the preservation, promotion and sustainable utilization of its cultural heritage. I would like to congratulate the executives who worked with scientific excellence and dedication, as well as the Athens Development Agency for its key role in supporting and implementing initiatives that promote knowledge, respect for memory and the extroversion of Athens. These awards encourage us to continue with even greater determination.”

Ioannis Georgizas, CEO of Athens Development Agency S.A., echoed this sentiment, stating: “The awards recognize the systematic way in which Athens Development Agency invests in the documentation, innovation and modernization of the Municipality’s cultural tools. We will continue to work consistently so that the history, knowledge and cultural heritage of the city remain alive and accessible to all. Congratulations to the executives who worked with dedication for this result.”

Details of the ‘Memory Trail’ and Museum Study

The ‘Memory Trail 1940-1944’ offers a thematic and chronological exploration of the 3rd Cemetery, focusing on the years of the Occupation. It highlights significant landmarks, monuments, and graves of those executed, connecting historical evidence with personal stories of individuals who perished before the liberation. The project is under the scientific supervision of Zetta Antonopoulou and the museological supervision of Eliza Neophytou.

The Study on the Museums of the Municipality of Athens, prepared at the behest of Development Athens, comprehensively maps all museums within the municipality’s administrative boundaries. It assesses their current status, educational offerings, and accessibility, while proposing innovative strategies to boost their public engagement and educational impact. The study received strong positive feedback and was selected as one of the six best papers presented at the Conference by the scientific committee, reinforcing its importance for the city’s cultural infrastructure.

This study is an integral part of Development Athens’ strategic plan for cultural enhancement, serving as a crucial tool for future actions aimed at fostering a more sustainable and accessible ‘cultural map’ for both residents and visitors.
