Athens, Attica, Greece – Public transport services in Athens, including the metro, electric train, and tram, will be suspended today, Wednesday, November 26, 2025, from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. This widespread halt follows a fatal work accident that occurred earlier this morning at the Athens Urban Rail Transport Company (STASY) depot in Piraeus.

Fatal Accident at Piraeus Depot

The incident involved a chief rolling stock technician who was fatally injured during routine technical work at the Piraeus repair base. According to a statement released by STASY management, the employee sustained fatal injuries while performing standard maintenance tasks. Local media outlet 902.gr reported that the worker was tragically crushed by a heavy load that fell on him. Firefighters were dispatched to the scene to free the technician, who was then rushed to Tzaneio Hospital in Piraeus. Despite efforts, doctors at the hospital confirmed his death.

Impact on Public Transport

The suspension of services will affect several key lines crucial for daily commuters in Athens. Specifically, Metro Line 1, which operates between Kifissia and Piraeus, will be impacted. Additionally, Metro Lines 2 and 3, as well as the entire tram network, will cease operations during the six-hour period. This measure is a direct response to the tragic event and is expected to cause significant disruption for residents and visitors relying on public transportation.

Union Calls for Investigation and Safety Improvements

In the wake of the accident, Spyros Revythis, vice president of the Athens Metro Workers’ Union (SELMA), extended his condolences to the family of the deceased technician. Revythis did not hesitate to attribute the incident to what he described as safety deficiencies and a chronic underestimation of hazards within the system, rather than dismissing it as a mere chance occurrence. He has publicly called for a full and thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident, emphasizing the urgent need for significant safety improvements to prevent any further fatalities in the future.

STASY management also issued a statement expressing their deepest condolences to the family of the deceased employee, acknowledging the profound loss.

Ongoing Investigation

Authorities, working in close coordination with STASY, have launched an immediate investigation into the circumstances of the accident. The primary objective of this inquiry will be to determine the exact cause of the technician’s death and to identify any contributing factors that may have led to the tragic event. The findings of this investigation will be crucial in implementing necessary changes and ensuring the safety of all personnel working within the public transport system.

The temporary suspension of services underscores the gravity of the situation and the commitment to addressing the immediate aftermath of the accident. Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses and as STASY works to resume normal operations safely.
