Athens, Greece – An association representing commuters on the Athens suburban railway, the Proastiakos, has lodged a formal letter of protest with railway operator Hellenic Train and network owner Hellenic Railways regarding recent rescheduling of services. The association claims the changes were implemented without timely notice and show a disregard for passenger needs, specifically protesting a critical early-morning cut to the timetable.
Commuters Denounce Lack of Consultation and Disruption
“Despite recent commitments to improve the flow and reliability of the Athens Proastiakos, the reality that numerous passengers face is far from an improvement, with the disruption of daily and work life schedules and worsening travel conditions seriously undermining trust in the railway system,” stated the Proastiakos Working Passengers Association.
The new timetable came into force on Saturday, November 22, 2025, less than 48 hours after its announcement by Hellenic Train. This rapid implementation has been a major point of contention for commuters, who argue it left them insufficient time to adjust their routines.
Removal of Key Early-Morning Service Causes Uproar
The commuters’ group specifically criticized the removal of a vital 5:28 a.m. Kiato-Piraeus service. This particular train was crucial for hundreds of employees who relied on it to reach work in a timely manner during peak morning hours.
The association highlighted that the resulting schedule gap between 4:39 a.m. and 6:28 a.m. is expected to overburden other services, leading to significant overcrowding. This, in turn, raises concerns about potential safety hazards and a decline in the overall reliability of the suburban rail system.
Furthermore, the association warned that short transfer times at stations, such as Ano Liosia, are now disrupting commuters’ work and personal schedules. The abrupt notification, just two days prior to the changes, exacerbated the negative impact on passengers.
Demands for Immediate Reinstatement and Future Involvement
In response to these disruptions, the Proastiakos Working Passengers Association has called for the immediate reinstatement of the missing early-morning train. They also demand formal involvement of passengers in any future timetable revisions, advocating for a more collaborative and passenger-centric approach to service planning.
The complaint has been widely distributed, not only to the railway companies but also to key governmental bodies. The association has forwarded its concerns to the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, the Deputy Minister of Environment and Energy, the Regulatory Authority for Railways, and members of parliament from Corinthia, including Infrastructure and Transport Minister Christos Dimas.
This widespread outreach underscores the seriousness with which commuters view these changes and their determination to see their concerns addressed. The protest highlights a growing tension between railway operators and their passengers, emphasizing the need for transparency and consideration in public transport planning.
The situation remains under observation as commuters await a response from the relevant authorities and railway companies. The outcome of this protest could set a precedent for how future changes to public transport services are communicated and implemented in Greece.
