Efforts to restore normalcy in Corfu are actively progressing after severe weather conditions impacted the island yesterday, November 21, in the early morning hours.

Government Officials Visit Corfu to Coordinate Recovery

Today, November 22, the Deputy Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Kostas Katsafados, along with the Secretary General for Disaster Recovery and State Aid, Petros Kampouris, are visiting Corfu. Their visit aims to conduct an on-site inspection of the affected areas and coordinate actions for immediate support to residents.

Meeting with Regional and Municipal Authorities

A meeting will also be held with representatives from the Ionian Islands Regional Authority and the North Corfu Municipal Authority. The objective of this meeting is to ensure full coordination among all stakeholders and to expedite restoration interventions.

According to an announcement from the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Deputy Minister K. Katsafados is in continuous communication with the municipal and regional authorities of the areas affected by the recent severe weather events.

Furthermore, a program of visits and inspections has already been set in motion, with the Deputy Minister scheduled to visit all affected areas in the near future to coordinate and initiate support and recovery actions.

The severe weather, which hit Corfu early yesterday, caused significant damage across various parts of the island. While specific details of the damage are yet to be fully disclosed, the presence of high-ranking government officials underscores the severity of the situation and the commitment to rapid recovery.

Local authorities, in cooperation with civil protection units, have been working tirelessly since the storm hit to clear roads, restore power, and provide assistance to residents whose properties may have been damaged. The coordination meeting today is crucial for streamlining these efforts and ensuring that resources are allocated efficiently.

The Ministry’s proactive approach, including the direct involvement of the Deputy Minister, aims to reassure citizens and accelerate the necessary steps for reconstruction and relief. This also includes assessing the extent of the damage to infrastructure, private properties, and public services, which will inform the subsequent phases of state aid and long-term recovery plans.

The visit by the Deputy Minister and Secretary General is expected to provide a clear picture of the situation on the ground and to establish a unified strategy for addressing the aftermath of the severe weather. This includes not only immediate relief but also planning for future resilience against similar climatic events.
