Corfu, Greece – Intense rainfall has battered the Ionian island of Corfu and the wider Epirus region, leading to a surge in emergency calls to the fire department. From early morning until 4:30 p.m. on Friday, November 21, 2025, a total of 367 calls were received, highlighting the significant impact of the severe weather conditions.

Corfu Bears Brunt of Ionian Storm

On the island of Corfu, the fire department recorded 180 calls for assistance. The affected areas were primarily concentrated in Sidari, Agios Stefanos Avliotes, Roda, and Kassiopi. Firefighting crews were actively engaged in 18 water pumping operations to mitigate flooding in homes and businesses. Additionally, they successfully removed seven fallen trees that were obstructing roads and posing hazards to residents.

The rapid response of the fire department was crucial in preventing more extensive damage and ensuring the safety of the local population. Residents in the affected areas reported localized flooding and difficulties with transportation due to the inclement weather.

Epirus Region Also Heavily Impacted

The Epirus region experienced a similar deluge, with the Operations Center receiving 187 calls for help. The calls originated from various locations, including Ioannina, Preveza, Filippiada, and Tzoumerka. Firefighters in Epirus conducted 30 water pumping operations, addressing widespread flooding issues. They also carried out 17 tree removals and provided assistance in three other instances, demonstrating the diverse challenges posed by the heavy rainfall.

The coordinated efforts of emergency services across both regions were instrumental in managing the crisis and providing timely aid to those affected by the severe weather.

National Meteorological Service Issued Warnings

Authorities confirmed that the National Meteorological Service had previously issued an emergency weather bulletin. This warning specifically highlighted the expectation of heavy rain and severe storms across the Ionian Islands, encompassing Corfu, as well as Aetolia-Acarnania and the Epirus region. The pre-emptive warning allowed residents and emergency services to prepare for the anticipated severe conditions.

According to the latest forecasts, a gradual easing of the severe weather conditions is expected to commence late on Friday night, offering some relief to the affected areas. However, residents are advised to remain vigilant and follow local authority guidelines as clean-up operations begin.

Community Response and Future Outlook

Local authorities are assessing the full extent of the damage caused by the heavy rainfall. While no major injuries have been reported, the focus will now shift to recovery efforts and supporting communities in their return to normalcy. The incident underscores the importance of robust emergency response systems and public awareness during extreme weather events.

The significant number of calls received by the fire department in such a short period highlights the intensity of the storm and the immediate need for assistance across Corfu and Epirus. The prompt and efficient actions of the firefighting crews were vital in addressing the numerous emergencies and minimizing potential harm.

Moving forward, discussions may arise regarding infrastructure improvements to better withstand similar weather events in the future, particularly in areas prone to flooding and tree falls. The experience serves as a reminder of nature’s unpredictable power and the necessity for continuous preparedness and adaptation.

Residents are encouraged to report any further issues to the emergency services and to take precautions when traveling, as road conditions may still be hazardous in some areas. The fire department remains on high alert to respond to any lingering effects of the storm.
