Monica Bellucci is making a much-anticipated return to Athens for the first screening of the documentary “Maria Callas – An Encounter.” This hybrid documentary, a moving dialogue between the legendary soprano and the contemporary muse who interprets her, is set to premiere at the Pallas Theater on Friday, December 5th, at 8 PM.
A Cinematic Tribute to Maria Callas
The acclaimed Italian star’s visit is at the invitation of the cultural organization “Lykofos,” led by George Lykiardopoulos. The film, directed by Yiannis Dimolitsas and Tom Wolf, was conceived during the global tour of the theatrical play “Maria Callas – Letters and Memoirs,” which ran from November 2019 to January 2023.
“Maria Callas – An Encounter” delves deep into the life of the iconic soprano, exploring her personal struggles and resilience. It offers a unique comparison between two distinct eras: the present and the time when Callas reached the pinnacle of her fame. The documentary fosters a profound dialogue between Bellucci and the voice that shaped the 20th century, highlighting how two women, despite their different backgrounds, connect through their shared love for art.
Bellucci’s Personal Connection to Callas
For Monica Bellucci, stepping into Callas’s shoes was a deeply personal experience. She connected with Callas’s fragility and, at the same time, her immense strength. Bellucci’s portrayal captures Callas’s grace, even in her most vulnerable moments, shedding light on the more silent chapters of her life. The film reveals the woman behind the idol, reflecting Bellucci’s own artistic journey as she honors the complexity between the diva and the woman.
International Acclaim and Festival Success
The documentary has garnered exceptional reviews and has traveled to major festivals across Europe and America, including the Festival del Cinema di Roma (October 2023), the 46th Thessaloniki Film Festival (October 2023), MoMA in New York (June 2024), the San Sebastián International Film Festival (September 2024), the Lyon Lumière Festival (2024), and the Festival international du film de Marrakech (2024). This international co-production between France, Italy, and Greece, which began as an idea by the talented Greek filmmaker Yiannis Dimolitsas at the Herodeion in 2021, now triumphantly returns to Athens four years later to complete its successful international journey.
The initial inspiration for the documentary stemmed from the stage production “Maria Callas: Letters and Memoirs,” also produced by Lykofos, in which Monica Bellucci first took to the stage, delivering three unforgettable and historic performances at the Herodeion in 2021. These performances saw unprecedented demand from Greek audiences, surpassing previous records for sold-out events.
Premiere and Public Discussion
The Athens premiere coincides with Maria Callas’s birthday and will be a special occasion, with Monica Bellucci in attendance. Following the screening, there will be an open discussion with Bellucci, moderated by Orestis Andreadakis, allowing the audience to engage directly with the star about her experience portraying Callas.
