Corfu, October 30 – The Ionian University will host a special neuroscience research presentation titled “From Harvard to Corfu! – Bridges of Knowledge and Science” on Tuesday, November 4, 2025. The event is organized in collaboration with AHEPA Corfu (Chapter HJ-34 “Corcyra”) and will take place at the Ceremonial Hall of the Ionian Academy.

Two Distinguished Greek Researchers from Harvard

Two prominent Greek women researchers from Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital will present their groundbreaking work in neuroscience. Dr. Anastasia Yendiki (Ph.D.) and Dr. Alexandra Touroutoglou (Ph.D.), both of whom began their studies in Greece before becoming pioneers in the international field of neuroscience, will share their research findings with the Corfu community.

The presentation will focus on how we understand memory, thought processes, and the power and aging of the human brain. The researchers will place particular emphasis on the bridges that connect science with society, making complex neuroscience accessible to the broader public.

Two Separate Sessions Scheduled

The event will be held in two distinct sessions to accommodate different audiences:

Morning Session: At 10:00 a.m., specifically designed for third-year gymnasium students and high school students (lyceum). This session aims to inspire young students and introduce them to cutting-edge neuroscience research.

Evening Session: At 7:00 p.m., open to the general public and members of the academic community. This session will provide an opportunity for adults, academics, and anyone interested in neuroscience to engage with the latest research from one of the world’s leading medical institutions.

Research Focus: Memory, Cognition, and Brain Aging

The presentation will cover the researchers’ work on understanding fundamental aspects of brain function. Dr. Yendiki and Dr. Touroutoglou’s research examines the mechanisms behind memory formation and retention, cognitive processes, and how the human brain changes with age.

Their work at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital represents some of the most advanced neuroscience research being conducted globally. The presentation in Corfu offers a rare opportunity for the local community to access this level of scientific expertise directly.

From Greece to Harvard: A Journey of Scientific Excellence

Both researchers began their academic journeys in Greece before advancing to international prominence in neuroscience. Their career trajectories serve as inspiration for Greek students considering careers in scientific research, demonstrating the possibilities available to those who pursue excellence in their fields.

The “From Harvard to Corfu” initiative emphasizes the importance of maintaining connections between Greek researchers working abroad and their home country, creating opportunities for knowledge transfer and inspiring the next generation of scientists.

Free Admission for All Attendees

Admission to both sessions will be free of charge. The organizers encourage students, educators, academics, and members of the general public with an interest in neuroscience, brain health, or medical research to attend.

The Ionian Academy Ceremonial Hall provides an appropriate venue for this significant scientific event, combining historical academic tradition with contemporary scientific discourse.

AHEPA Corfu Partnership

The event is co-organized by AHEPA Corfu (Chapter HJ-34 “Corcyra”), an organization dedicated to promoting education, philanthropy, and civic responsibility. AHEPA’s involvement underscores the importance of community organizations in facilitating access to high-level scientific knowledge and fostering educational opportunities on the island.

The collaboration between the Ionian University and AHEPA Corfu represents a model for how academic institutions and community organizations can work together to bring world-class educational experiences to local populations.

Significance for Corfu’s Academic Community

The presentation represents a significant opportunity for Corfu’s academic community to engage with cutting-edge neuroscience research. For students at the Ionian University and local secondary schools, the event provides direct access to researchers working at one of the world’s premier medical research institutions.

The dual-session format ensures that both younger students exploring potential career paths and established academics can benefit from the presentation at appropriate levels of engagement.

The event is scheduled for Tuesday, November 4, 2025, with sessions at 10:00 a.m. for students and 7:00 p.m. for the general public at the Ionian Academy Ceremonial Hall in Corfu.
