Medical School Certification Marks Major Milestone
The National Authority for Higher Education (ETHAAE) granted approval yesterday to the Medical School of UNIC Athens (University of Nicosia), marking a significant development for private higher education in Greece. The certification was announced on October 30, 2025, during a session of ETHAAE’s Supreme Council.
According to the announcement by journalist Ismini Charalambopoulos, eight additional undergraduate study programs from non-state universities received certification during yesterday’s session. This brings the total number of certified programs to 24 out of 28 submitted by non-state higher education institutions (NPPE).
Four Programs Still Awaiting Certification
Three undergraduate programs from the Law Schools and one program in Computer Science remain pending certification. ETHAAE’s relevant committee is scheduled to convene next week to evaluate these remaining four programs.
The certification process represents a crucial step for non-state universities operating in Greece, as it validates their academic programs and ensures they meet national educational standards.
Admission Requirements for Non-State Universities
The four non-state universities operating in Greece have established specific admission criteria for prospective students, aligned with Greek legislative framework requirements.
UNIC Athens Admission Criteria
The minimum requirement for admission to an undergraduate degree program is possession of a recognized high school diploma or internationally recognized equivalent qualifications. Students with a high school graduation grade lower than 7.5/10 or 15/20, or equivalent depending on the grading system of the country of issue, receive additional academic guidance and monitoring during their first year of studies. Certain study programs have higher admission requirements.
According to Greek legislative framework, which sets minimum admission criteria, eligible candidates include:
a) Greek or foreign citizens holding a General Lyceum (GE.L.) or Vocational Lyceum (EPA.L.) diploma with an average grade in the four Panhellenic examination subjects greater than or equal to the minimum admission threshold. This threshold is calculated as the lowest of the average grades of all examinees per scientific field, multiplied by a coefficient of zero point eight (0.8) in their year of participation.
b) Holders of equivalent secondary education diplomas from recognized foreign schools in Greece (level 4 of the National Qualifications Framework).
c) Holders of international secondary education diplomas awarded by schools in Greece or abroad, foreign citizens holding secondary education diplomas equivalent to the Greek Lyceum, or equivalent vocational education titles that grant them admission rights to tertiary education institutions in the country where they studied.
Keele University, Greece Requirements
Registration of prospective students in the study program takes place upon completion of required documents, submission of necessary supporting documents, and signing of an agreement concerning, among other things, the tuition payment plan.
Registration is considered complete when the prospective student has completed and signed the registration application, which includes personal details, information about academic background, other information forming the overall profile (such as professional experience, knowledge of foreign languages, computer skills), a personal statement, and consent for the provision of personal data and their use by the NPPE. The registration application is completed in both Greek and English.
American College Anatolia Admission Process
Eligible for enrollment in first-cycle study programs are Greek or foreign citizens holding a Greek General Lyceum or Vocational Lyceum diploma with an average grade in the four Panhellenic examination subjects greater than or equal to the minimum admission threshold, calculated as the lowest average grade of all examinees per scientific field multiplied by coefficient 0.8 in their year of participation.
During evaluation of applications for the first cycle of studies, the following are taken into account: grades from the last three years of high school or equivalent documentation, and an English language proficiency certificate with minimum CEFR level B2, which must have been obtained within the last three years. For certificates older than three years, an interview with the English department is required.
Applications are examined by the New Student Selection Committee, consisting of the Director of Admissions, a member of the Student Admissions Department, and chaired by the Deputy Dean of Student Recruitment and Management.
CITY – European Branch of the University of York
Candidates must have completed their 17th year of age on the first day of the month in which they will begin their study program. Candidates who have completed their 17th year but not their 18th will be admitted only with written permission from an appropriate adult, usually a parent or guardian.
Anyone who has not completed the age of 17 on the first day of the month in which they will begin their study program will not be admitted without informing the Academic Registry Secretary or their appointee, and must obtain written permission from an appropriate adult, usually a parent or guardian.
Prospective students between 16 and 17 years old will be admitted only if they can demonstrate their ability to live independently in the university community. If assessments of this ability are not convincing, admission may be postponed. Students under 18 at the time of registration must sign a commitment with the University describing how the University will treat them differently until they reach 18 years of age.
The following candidates have the right to enroll in the first cycle of studies:
A. Greek or foreign citizens holding a General Lyceum or Vocational Lyceum diploma with an average grade in the four Panhellenic examination subjects greater than or equal to the minimum admission threshold, calculated as the lower of the average grades of all examinees per scientific field, multiplied by coefficient 0.8 in their year of participation in Panhellenic Examinations.
B. Holders of equivalent secondary education titles from recognized foreign schools in Greece (level 4 of the National Qualifications Framework).
C. Holders of international secondary education diplomas awarded by schools in Greece or abroad, foreign citizens holding secondary education diplomas equivalent to the Greek Lyceum or equivalent vocational education titles that grant them admission rights to tertiary education institutions in their country of study.
D. Candidates must have very good knowledge of English certified by a recognized provider with appropriate grading. CITY ULE publishes the list of recognized providers and required grades on an annual basis. English language qualifications should normally have been obtained within the last three years, taking into account the program start date at CITY ULE.
Next Steps for Remaining Programs
The certification process for the remaining four programs is expected to conclude following next week’s scheduled meeting of ETHAAE’s committee. Once all programs receive certification, the non-state universities will be fully operational under the Greek higher education framework.
The establishment of non-state universities in Greece represents a significant shift in the country’s educational landscape, traditionally dominated by public institutions. The certification process ensures that these institutions meet rigorous academic standards while providing students with additional educational options.
