Corfu is set for a wet and windy period from today until Saturday as a low-pressure system crosses the Ionian. The forecast indicates persistent showers, spells of heavier rain, and some African dust, as southeasterly winds get stronger across the island and nearby waters. A bulletin from Start Media on October 15th states the conditions will build through Thursday night, reaching their peak on Friday before slowly improving on Saturday.

How long will the wet and windy spell last?

Unsettled weather is expected for about the next 48 hours, with rain at intervals and the strongest winds blowing between late Thursday and midday Friday. Daytime highs are predicted to be around 20°C, with minimum temperatures climbing to about 16°C due to the southerly air flow. Humidity will remain high the whole time, getting up to nearly 95% at night.

When are the strongest winds expected?

Winds will pick up late Thursday night, peaking from late Thursday until midday on Friday. On Corfu itself, southeasterly winds are expected to hit 6-7 Beaufort. In the waters near the Diapontia Islands and Paxos, gusts might reach as high as 8 Beaufort. Earlier on Thursday, the winds were lighter – about 3 Beaufort – strengthening in some areas to 5 Beaufort by night as the rain sets in.

What will conditions be like across Corfu?

  • Rainfall: Showers on and off, with the heaviest downpours expected on Friday.
  • Wind: Southeasterly winds that will strengthen at times; they’ll be at their strongest from late Thursday to Friday.
  • Temperature: Highs around 20°C, with lows of about 16°C because of the southerly winds.
  • Humidity: High throughout the day, peaking at nearly 95% during the night.
  • African dust: Some episodes are possible, which could reduce visibility and cause haze.

Day-by-day outlook

  • Thursday: Light rain during the morning, with showers becoming more intense overnight. Southeasterly winds will be around 3 Beaufort, increasing in some spots to 5 Beaufort.
  • Friday: This will be the most active day, with rain and strong southeasterly winds of 6-7 Beaufort on Corfu, and up to 8 Beaufort near Diapontia and Paxos.
  • Saturday: The weather will still be unsettled with some passing showers, but conditions should gradually get better as the day goes on.

Which areas are most exposed?

Coastal and marine areas will be most affected by the strong winds, particularly around the Diapontia Islands and Paxos. Further inland, the spells of rain and high humidity could impact visibility and general comfort, especially in the evening and overnight.

Where to find more information?

Start Media has not announced any specific disruptions. Residents and visitors should keep an eye on local updates as the situation develops over the next couple of days.
