An elderly woman was scammed over the phone in the seaside village of Moraïtika, South Corfu, around noon on Wednesday, 15 October 2025. She told Corfu TV News that an unknown person called, claimed to be an employee of DEDDIE (the Hellenic Electricity Distribution Network Operator), warned of a “risk of electrocution” in her house, and demanded money for immediate repairs.

The victim did as the caller instructed, gathering cash and jewelry, putting them in a basin, and giving them to someone who came to her home to collect them. The matter was reported to the South Corfu Police Station. As of Thursday, 16 October 2025, no official estimate of the loss or information about suspects had been made public.

How did the scam unfold in Moraïtika?

To create a sense of urgency and appear credible, the caller claimed there was an electrical danger, mentioned DEDDIE, and framed the call as an emergency. This tactic convinced the resident to skip her usual checks and agree to have her valuables picked up in person.

Who was involved?

The person scammed is an older woman living in Moraïtika, part of the South Corfu municipality. The scammer’s identity is still unknown; he claimed to work for DEDDIE during the phone call. The initial report did not provide any more details about him.

What action has been taken so far?

The incident was reported to the South Corfu Police Station soon after it happened. By Thursday morning, the authorities had not released any information about suspects, recovered items, or the total value of what was stolen.

Why this matters to South Corfu residents

This scam serves as a reminder of the dangers of impersonation schemes aimed at seniors and shows why it’s important to be cautious with unexpected calls about urgent technical problems. Checking a caller’s identity using official service numbers before giving away money or valuables is a key step in preventing such incidents.

When and where did it happen?

The scam took place in Moraïtika, South Corfu, around noon on Wednesday, 15 October 2025, with news of the incident spreading later that day. As of Thursday, 16 October 2025, there have been no new updates on the case.
