Athens reintroduces itself: the 21st‑century landmarks shaping the city

Yesterday evening in Athens, the Life in Athens section showed how the capital is presenting itself anew with a wave of 21st-century landmarks that mix culture, public space and everyday life. From repurposed factories to seafront parks and towers that reshape the skyline, these places sketch a civic identity built on access, reuse and design.

Why do these new landmarks matter to Athens?

A landmark is not just something eye-catching; it is a reference point with social and cultural weight. The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC), opened in 2016 to a design by Renzo Piano, is a complete example: it houses the National Library and the National Opera, offers a large park and promenades with views over the Faliro waterfront, and draws thousands of visitors of all ages every day.

Which flagship projects set the pace?

On the former airport at Elliniko, the Riviera Tower, already Greece’s tallest, has reached the 32nd of 50 floors and is expected to complete in 2026, lifting the city’s skyline to 200 meters. Nearby, the Experience Park has welcomed over 2 million visitors and will become part of the Metropolitan Park within the wider redevelopment led by LAMDA Development.

Who is driving the change?

The National Museum of Contemporary Art (EMST) has operated fully since 2020 in the former FIX factory, while the renovated National Gallery adds new infrastructure and exhibition capacity. Along Syngrou, Onassis Stegi (2010) anchors the performing arts and public debate. The restored former Public Tobacco Factory, now hosting the Parliament’s Library and Printing House with exhibitions supported by NEON across a 19,000 sq m complex, stands as a model of social reuse.

Where are the new urban hotspots?

Technopolis in Gazi has been active since 1999 with the Industrial Gas Museum and a dense program of events. In Piraeus, the once dormant Piraeus Tower was fully renovated and delivered in 2024 as offices, retail and public spaces. The Ilisian (the former Hilton) combines Conrad Athens, residences and dining, and includes the 5,500 sq m House of NYNN members’ club, already in operation. Beyond the center, the Spata retail hub ( Designer Outlet Athens and Smart Park ) functions as a micro-city of shopping and leisure, while Flisvos Marina (since 2002) draws more than 3,000,000 visitors annually for promenades and cultural events.

Why does this matter for residents?

These places are not just monuments; they are lived spaces that put accessibility, neighborhood life and public use first, linking culture with everyday routines.

What’s next and when?

The former Viohalco factory in Tavros is being transformed by Noval Property into a mixed-use complex with homes, a hotel, a food hall and, for the first time, an organized Art District for culture and digital arts. The expanded National Archaeological Museum (around 30,000 sq m of new space, underground galleries and an urban garden) will converse with the Polytechnic and Akropol on Patission, shaping a new cultural axis. At the same time, historic buildings such as Minion, the Schliemann Mansion, the National Insurance headquarters, the Serpieri Mansion, Stoa Arsakeiou and the Attikon and Apollon cinemas are entering phases of transformation for hospitality, dining, retail or housing. Some timelines were not specified in the source.

Where are emerging photo-worthy spots?

In the age of social media, informal reference points are multiplying, from a bench with Lycabettus views to a neighborhood market in Kypseli or a café in Pangrati, adding lived stories to the city’s evolving map.
