Corfu launches two‑day drive to protect marine and coastal environment

A two-day programme to protect Corfus marine and coastal areas is underway, led by AegeanRebreath together with the Municipality of Central Corfu. Organisers say the plan mixes education, community involvement and practical clean-ups in Corfu town and nearby areas. It starts today and runs into the weekend.

What do residents think?

Local people are central to the plan. An open consultation invites producers, sea professionals, fishers and residents to share simple, workable ideas for prevention, for example cutting marine litter or handling boat residues more safely. Who knows the bays better than the people who work and live by them? By giving the floor to the community, the team hopes to turn one-off actions into everyday habits that keep bays and beaches in good shape.

How did local authorities respond?

The Municipality of Central Corfu co-hosts the effort and backs the launch of an anti-pollution station for responsible management of fuel and lubricant residues from vessels. The station will be inaugurated at 12:00 in Garitsa. It is a concrete upgrade to on-shore services that can reduce accidental discharges and improve everyday waste practices for small craft and marina users.

Who is taking part?

Alongside students and teachers reached through school workshops, the line-up includes volunteer divers working underwater, shoreline volunteers on land, and representatives of local maritime trades. The effort ends with a combined underwater and coastal clean-up at the port of Ipsos, tackling debris on the seabed and litter on the beach.

What does it mean for the city?

Cleaner waters are directly linked to public health, fisheries and tourism, and Corfu relies on these. During the actions, teams will make field notes and measurements on the condition of the coastal zone and seawater. These observations can map problem spots, guide the next clean-ups and inform municipal policies on waste prevention and circular economy steps.

What are the next dates?

  • Friday, 3 October: School workshops on marine pollution and circular economy; anti-pollution station inauguration at 12:00 (Garitsa); open community consultation at 18:30 (Faliraki).
  • Saturday, 4 October: Underwater and shoreline clean-up at Ipsos port; field research activities; end-of-action debrief.

Note: the initial announcement also mentioned a 45 October window; this inconsistency should be checked against the final organiser schedule.

Where to find more information?

Key details were reported by the regional ERT Corfu desk. Specific instructions for volunteer registration or equipment were not in the source and may be issued by AegeanRebreath or the Municipality closer to each activity.

By bringing together education, better infrastructure and direct action in the field, the two-day programme offers a practical way for Corfu to tackle marine pollution at its source while getting the community involved.
